John David Stone was the first child of James Stone & Mary Ann Sutton born March 9th, 1849 at Duke St, West Bromwich, & christened April 22nd, 1849 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs
John & his parents were living at John St, West Bromwich in 1851, where his father was a furnaceman.
By 1861 the family had moved to Parker St, Bradford, Manchester, Lancs & John now had 3 younger brothers.
John was not found in the 1871 census records.
John David married Betsy Ellis at St Paul’s, Burslem, Staffs on October 20th, 1872. John’s father was given as James Stone, a puddler. (John’s parents & siblings had returned to live at High St, Tunstall, Wolstanton by 1871 & Burslem is in the Wolstanton registration district.) Betsy was christened Eliza Ellis on March 31st,1850 at St Paul's, Burslem, the daughter of Edna & Edward Ellis, a potter.
It appears that John David & Betsy had a daughter, Rebecca.

To date no divorce papers have been found for John David & Betsy but on December 24th, 1877 John married Mary Hannah Storey at St Simon, Salford, Lancs. Mary was born January 5th, 1855 at Yarm, N. Yorks, the daughter of Ann Bennison & John Storey, a groom.
The 1881 census shows Betsy, a pot maker, & daughter Rebecca living at 85 High St, Burslem. With them was a 22 year old lodger, George Harrison, a hawker. Betsy (Elizabeth) & George married on November 27th, 1889 at Sneyd, Wolstanton. Neither Betsy nor George could sign their names & both gave their address as 21 Chapel Lane. Betsy gave her occupation as a potter & her marital status was firstly ‘spinster’ which was crossed out & replaced with ‘widow’. Witnesses at the wedding were George Vearm? & Emily Ellis.
The 1891 census shows Betsy, (now Elizabeth, aged 28!) married to George Harrison, fish hawker, living at 21 Chapel Lane, Burslem. With them was ‘step’ daughter Rebecca, now aged 19 & a granddaughter Elizabeth Stone aged 10 months.
Rebecca married John Hammonds, a 19 year old carter, on June 7th 1891 at Holy Trinity Church, Sneyd, Staffs. She gave her address as 21 Chapel Lane & her father as John Stone, forgeman. Rebecca & John went on to have 9 children by 1911.
In 1881 John David & Mary were living at 24 Rhyll St, Pendleton, Salford & John was described as an iron worker. They had a 9 month old son, John. Also living with them were Hannah & Ralph Baker, an iron works puddler & their daughter Mary A Baker (10).
John & Mary had moved to Townfield Cottages, Huyton, Widnes, Lancs by 1891 & John was still a labourer in the ironworks. They had 4 children at home – John, Mary A (7), Rachel (4) & Agnes (2). They again had 2 boarders.
Mary died on August 19th, 1896 at 10 Townfield Cottages, Huyton Quarry, aged 41.

John remarried on June 4th, 1898, at Lancaster, Lancs. His third wife was Catherine Harriet Barnes (nee Boss), born Oct-December 1853 at Appleby, Leicestershire, the daughter of Mary & Thomas Boss, a printer. (At the time of the 1881census Catherine was found in the Bolton District Union Workhouse with a 1 year old son William. Catherine was unmarried & described as a domestic servant. Her birthplace was recorded as Appleby, Leicestershire but amended by someone as Westmoreland.) Catherine had previously married Edwin Barnes, a cloth weaver, in 1885 & they had a daughter Mary Ellen born in Bolton, Lancs. Edwin Barnes died in 1895 in Bolton.
In 1901 John & Catherine were living at 14 Holme St, Turton, near Bolton & John was described as a firebeater at a cotton mill. Catherine’s place of birth was given as Appleby, Westmoreland. With them were Catherine’s daughter Mary Ellen Barnes (14), a cotton weaver, & John’s children from his previous marriage – Agnes, Joseph (9) & Eli (7).
Daughter Agnes married William Thomas Sewell on March 10th 1906 in Bolton. The 1911 census shows them living in Ainsworth, near Bolton with their 2 children & William was a dyer in the bleaching trade.
John & Catherine were living at 7 Fortune St, Bolton in 1911 & John was now a night watchman at a spinning mill. Sons Joseph & Eli were both at home & described as ‘plater down Croft (bleacher)’. John & Catherine had no children of their own.
Son Joseph married Florence Yates on July 3rd, 1911 at St Marks, Bolton. Joseph served during WW1 with the Lancashire Fusiliers who he joined on December 5th, 1914 at Bolton. At the time of his enlistment he was a collier & gave his address as 92 Holden St, Bolton. Joseph only served for 13 weeks when he was discharged due to disablement for which he received a pension.
Son Eli married Hannah Dalton in July-September 1912 at St James, Bolton. During WW1 Eli served as a Private with the Lancashire Fusiliers.
John died May 18th, 1923, aged 74, at Bolton.
It seems that Catherine enjoyed a long life & died aged 98 in Jan-March 1950, her death being registered at Farnworth, Lancs.
